This announcement comes after previous updates on the growth of Starlink’s subscriber base. In May 2022, SpaceX reported to the Federal Communications Commission that Starlink had over 400,000 subscribers worldwide. In March, the company indicated that it had around 250,000 subscribers, including both consumer and enterprise customers. In January 2022, SpaceX announced that Starlink had more than 145,000 subscribers.

In August SpaceX announced it was partnering with T-Mobile to allow mobile phones to connect directly with Starlink satellites, beta testing set to begin in late 2023. This partnership could potentially bring even more users to Starlink’s subscriber base, the service aims to connect vast majority of smartphones already on T‑Mobile’s network. T-Mobile US is the second-largest wireless carrier in the United States, with more than 110 million subscribers.
