Mack Trucks, a leading American truck manufacturer, has unveiled its latest electric vehicle – the MD Electric. This new medium-duty vehicle is Mack’s second battery electric vehicle (BEV) and is aimed at providing customers with a zero-tailpipe emissions option for medium-duty applications.

The Mack MD Electric was revealed for the first time during the National Truck Equipment Association (NTEA) 2023 Work Truck Show in Indianapolis, where it generated significant interest.

Mack’s global president, Martin Weissburg, noted that the addition of a BEV to the company’s medium-duty lineup supports its long-term sustainability goals, as Mack continues to lead the way in electrification in the trucking industry. The company already boasts the heavy-duty Mack LR Electric refuse vehicle, which went into production in 2021.

Configurations

The Mack MD Electric, which is produced at Roanoke Valley Operations (RVO) in Virginia, will be available in Class 6 and Class 7 ratings. The MD Electric is exempt from the 12 percent Federal Excise Tax (FET), just like its diesel counterpart. Customers can choose between two lithium-ion battery configurations: a 150kWh or 240kWH. The MD Electric can be charged using either AC or DC charging units, and the regenerative braking system helps recapture energy from the multiple stops the vehicle makes each day.

The MD Electric is also available in 4×2 configurations and boasts a short bumper-to-back-of-cab (BBC) measurement of 103 inches, an industry best. Mack matched the bold look and styling of the Mack Anthem as a basis for the MD Electric grille and hood design.

The Mack MD Electric is set to meet the needs of trucking applications requiring dry van/refrigerated, stake/flatbed, and dump vocations. The MD6 model does not require a Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) to operate for non-hazardous payloads.

Reliability

Built with the same focus on reliability, durability, and productivity that customers have come to expect from a Mack truck, the MD Electric is designed specifically for medium-duty applications. The vehicle features a three-phase Permanent Magnet Synchronous motor and all on-board accessories are powered by Nickel Manganese Cobalt (NMC) Oxide lithium-ion batteries.

Mack dealers

Mack dealers, many of which are already Mack Certified Electric Vehicle (EV) dealers, will support the MD Electric, demonstrating the company’s commitment to providing excellent customer service.
