New Era of Lunar Economy for Lunar Infrastructure Development
The Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA), a trailblazer in defense and aerospace innovation, has embarked on a groundbreaking mission to develop a sustainable lunar economy. This initiative, known as the LunA-10 project, aims to create an integrated, multiservice commercial lunar infrastructure, fundamentally transforming space exploration and commercialization
“LunA-10 has the potential to upend how the civil space community thinks about spurring widespread commercial activity on and around the Moon within the next 10 years,”Michael Nayak, Program Manager, DARPA’s Strategic Technology Office.
DARPA’s LunA-10 project, launched in August 2023, is a ten-year initiative involving 14 companies. These firms are tasked with developing technology concepts that span various lunar services, including lunar power, mining, in-situ resource utilization, construction, robotics, communications, navigation, timing, transit, mobility, and logistics. The project’s ultimate aim is to establish a monetizable, commercially owned and operated lunar infrastructure.

The selected companies, which range from launch providers to robotic vehicle makers, will work in a highly collaborative environment for seven months. Their goal is to design integrated system-level solutions that address the broad spectrum of lunar services. This collaboration signifies a significant step towards a unified approach in space exploration and commercialization.
Technological Innovations and Contributions

For instance, Firefly Aerospace plans to develop a framework for on-orbit spacecraft hubs, utilizing their Elytra vehicle to define on-orbit services like refueling and transport.
