Creating an open social media ecosystem for more choice and control
Bluesky is a project with a mission to develop large-scale adoption of technologies for open and decentralized public conversation.
The birth of Bluesky
In 2019, Twitter announced its intention to fund a project that would create an open and decentralized standard for social media, which later became known as Bluesky. Since then, the Bluesky community has been working together to understand the decentralized web ecosystem and outline the core tenets of what an open protocol for social media should include and the technologies on which it should be built. Bluesky PBLLC was formed at the end of 2021 to pursue this mission.
Bluesky’s decentralized social media
The mission of Bluesky is to develop and drive large-scale adoption of technologies for open and decentralized public conversation. Decentralization can catalyze innovation and competition among service providers, give users more control over their data and privacy, and enable self-governance by communities.
Benefits of decentralization
Bluesky aims to create an ecosystem that is both user-friendly and decentralized. By integrating self-certifying protocols with delegated hosting, the platform can provide users with the benefits of decentralization, such as more innovation and competition among service providers, while also being user-friendly. A decentralized social media ecosystem can also allow for more self-governance by communities and give users more control over their data and privacy.
Bluesky PBLLC’s approach to decentralization
Bluesky PBLLC plans to proactively build tooling for reputation and moderation systems that are transparent, opt-in, and multi-layered. The company aims to create an ecosystem that enables users to switch services easily, while also providing developers with the opportunity to build performant apps.
The future of Bluesky
Bluesky is still in the early stages of development, but the company has big plans for the future. Bluesky PBLLC plans to continue developing and refining the open protocol for social media, as well as building tooling for reputation and moderation systems that are transparent, opt-in, and multi-layered.
The company hopes to attract more developers and users to the ecosystem and foster a community of contributors who share its vision for a more open and decentralized social media landscape. Join the waitlist to try the beta before it’s publicly available. Find jobs at Bluesky.
