US Postal Service announces plan to deploy 66,000 electric vehicles by 2028
The United States Postal Service (USPS) has announced a plan to deploy over 66,000 electric vehicles (EVs) by 2028, at a cost of $9.6 billion. Funding for the initiative is being provided by Congress and the Postal Service’s “Delivering for America” network modernization efforts. At least 60,000 of the EVs will be purpose-built Next Generation Delivery Vehicles (NGDV), with 75% (45,000) being battery electric. An additional 21,000 battery electric delivery vehicles, representing a mix of commercial-off-the-shelf (COTS) vehicles, will also be purchased. The USPS’s transition to EVs is expected to drive substantial carbon reductions through logistics improvements and reduced transportation, as well as providing safer and more efficient vehicles for carriers and communities. The transition to EVs is also expected to create jobs and stimulate economic growth through the development and production of new EV technologies and infrastructure. The USPS’s move towards EVs is being hailed as a major step towards a more sustainable future and is likely to inspire other organizations and individuals to consider making the switch to EVs as well.
